Hostgator Review

After looking for decently priced hosting for a couple of months, I eventually decided on a Hostgator package, as it had been recommended to me by a few web developer friends. The main things that attracted me were the very good space and bandwidth limits, and of course, the unlimited domains (available on the Baby package and up). PHP 4 is standard, and PHP 5 is available if you file a request with the support team.

The order process was very quick, I had my CPanel login in a matter of minutes, and was soon adding domains. Ordering is done via credit card - as per the norm for internet transactions - and was conducted over an encrypted connection, ensuring peace of mind.

Server speed and bandwidth has been great, sites I host are quick to load (this site is hosted on my Hostgator account), and I have yet to notice any downtime! The support team are quick to respond - case in point, Hostgator requires your domains to be already registered at the relevant domain registrar, before you can add them to your CPanel. This is not a problem with most registrars, which allow you to specify nameservers and register your domain. Unfortunately the .co.za registrar states that your specified nameservers must be authoritative for the domain you are adding, before you can register. So this obviously causes a deadlock - I filed a ticket in the Hostgator support system, and 20 minutes later a tech had removed the pre-registration lock on my CPanel, and I was able to add the necessary .co.za domains to my account.

Using Fantastico to install pre-configured software on several of my other domains was quick and simple, although I had a problem with PHP the first couple of sites I installed - but that turned out to be a server error that was resolved the next day. I haven’t had a problem since then, fortunately.

Hostgator have been in the game for several years, so they are unlikely to disappear any time soon, something that is a concern in such a competitive market.

All in all, Hostgator provide quality services at a really good rate - apart from a couple teething issues mentioned above, my experience has been nothing but good with this company. I initially took out a 6 month contract, but I think I’ll be paying annually from now on. The $10/month Baby package is an awesome deal for web developers looking to host multiple sites/client sites, and is definitely worth the $3 increase over the most basic package (only 1 domain allowed).

You didn’t hear it from me, but apparently using jury or iceishot as coupon codes will give you a $9.94 discount on your first order! They were valid when I signed up, but things might’ve changed since then… give it a try though.

This link has my affiliate ID attached - this does not affect your order/browsing in any way, but will earn me a bit of money if you buy a package from Hostgator.
Here’s a link without my affiliate ID, for the paranoid people out there.
